Yoga Therapy Private Sessions

(Therapeutic SomaYoga)

with Maile Wicklander MA, RYT-500, MBSR Teacher (Yoga Therapist in Training)

Yoga Therapy (Therapeutic SomaYoga) merges somatic principles and yoga to build strength, stability, and flexibility/mobility while fostering an embodied connection between mind and body.

Informed by the work of Thomas Hanna and Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, this method combines gentle, curiosity-driven somatic movements, classic yoga asana, and functional movement for a comprehensive approach to well-being. By releasing tension patterns, retraining muscle imbalances, and integrating interoception practices and proprioceptive touch, SomaYoga helps prevent injuries, calm and stabilize the nervous system, and bring awareness to stress triggers.

Each private session is tailored to your individual needs, guiding you to find easeful postures and modifications that honor your unique body. The result is a more expansive, awake, and fulfilling relationship with your mind, body, and spirit.

Yoga Therapy is inherently trauma-informed & trauma-sensitive.

Yoga Therapy can be done on a mat on the floor and/or on a Thai massage table. Physical touch is offered, but is always optional.

Description of a first yoga therapy session:

  • We are located at 2827 W. Belden, just around the corner from the California/Milwaukee intersection and the California Blue Line stop. Free parking is limited directly in front of the studio on Belden and 1 block away along Sacramento. Metered parking is available along Milwaukee and along California and behind the studio on Lyndale. Please note that some streets around the studio have neighborhood parking restrictions.

  • Please arrive 5-10 early to find parking and get settled in.

  • When you arrive, you will be greeted by Maile (no one else will be in the studio during your session) and offered water or a cup of hot tea.

  • You will remove your shoes and place your belongings in a cubbie and/or hang jackets, or you can bring your belongings into the studio with you.

  • I will have a spot all set up for you with a mat, props, chair and/or massage table in the studio space.

    • Be sure to wear movable, comfortable clothing.

  • We will work together to continue to set-up the most comfortable environment we can create for you including lighting, music or no music, temperature, scents, etc.

  • During a first session, we will likely review your intake form, get to know each other and chat about your goals for the first 10-15 minutes.

  • Depending on your specific goals and intentions, we will then do some combination of breath-work, movement and/or meditation for the remainder of our time.

    • This is YOUR time, we can use it as you wish. I will have a plan, but if something doesn’t feel right, we will do something else. The session is always a two-way communication and can be shifted and changed, as requested. You are in charge of your well-being and comfort.

  • You will leave likely feeling more calm, more relaxed, more peaceful, more embodied and more empowered. You have taken the first step to self-care and taken charge of your wellness.

  • I will then follow-up with an email reviewing what practices we did and I may offer videos or other resources. I will suggest some home practices and we will make a plan for subsequent session(s).

    • Generally, I suggest at least 3-5 sessions to see if private sessions are right for you.
