Therapeutic SomaYoga Private Sessions
with Maile Wicklander MA, RYT-500, MBSR Teacher (Yoga Therapist in Training)
Therapeutic SomaYoga (somatics + yoga) is a unique approach to building strength, stability and flexibility while connecting mind + body. We blend neuroscience (somatics), classic yoga asana (postures), and functional movement to build intelligent, conscious body awareness.
Somatic movements release tension patterns & retrain muscle imbalances. Yoga practices calm & stabilize the nervous system and mind. These combined, can lead to greater ease in our daily activities and movements, help prevent injuries and bring more awareness to causes of stress.
During a session, you are guided to find the postures, movements and modifications that are unique to you and your specific needs. They are ideal for anyone interested in finding a more free, curious, and awake relationship with their interconnected mind/body/spirit.
What is therapeutic SomaYoga?
Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, yoga therapy is the specific application of yoga tools—postures/exercises, breathwork, meditation techniques, and more—to address an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional needs.
Yoga therapists have in-depth training to help them assess and keep clients safe. They work with you to address your specific goals while considering any limitations you might be experiencing.
How can therapeutic SomaYoga help?
Therapeutic SomaYoga can be helpful in*:
Chronic pain, including low-back pain, arthritis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other types of pain such as that associated with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Mental health, including concerns like anxiety, stress, depression, trauma and PTSD, insomnia, and others. Nervous system regulation.
Neurological issues and complications of stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Support for illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Overall well-being (you don’t need to be sick or in pain for yoga therapy to have value!) and healthy aging.
Recovering from injuries (once a doctor has cleared you for movement/yoga) and prevent future injuries (that supports an active lifestyle), pre- and post-surgery/replacement support.
Becoming more embodied (increasing interoception)
Bringing awareness to and addressing postural imbalances in the body due to repeated daily movements/injuries/chronic pain/habitual stress responses, etc.
*(this list is by no means exhaustive :)
