Strengthen Your Body, Your Mind & Your Nervous System with Breath, Movement & Mindfulness

Yoga Therapy (Therapeutic SomaYoga) merges somatic principles, breath-work, and mindful movement to support nervous system regulation, emotional well-being, and a deeper mind-body connection. Through gentle, curiosity-driven movement, this approach fosters a sense of safety, ease, and self-awareness, allowing the body to release stored tension and stress patterns.

Grounded in the rich traditions and ancient wisdom of Yoga and Buddhist mindfulness practices, this method honors time-tested approaches to self-awareness, healing, and well-being. Integrating these traditions with the modern somatic movement principles of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais and Thomas Hanna, the research-backed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, and nervous system regulation techniques informed by Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, this approach weaves together somatic exploration, functional movement, breath-work and meditation techniques and therapeutic yoga to create a holistic path to resilience, healing, and self-regulation.

These time-tested practices, once understood only in spiritual traditions, are now being validated by neuroscience, somatic psychology, and medical research. Studies from institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, and the NIH confirm that mindfulness, breathwork, and movement-based practices can:

  • Regulate the nervous system and reduce stress hormones

  • Enhance emotional resilience and support trauma recovery

  • Retrain movement patterns to prevent chronic tension and pain

  • Improve interoception (deep body awareness) for greater self-regulation

  • Balance the mind-body connection for long-term well-being

Each private session is tailored to your individual needs, offering a safe, trauma-sensitive space for self-discovery, healing, and transformation. Whether practiced on a mat or a Thai massage table, with or without touch, Yoga Therapy provides a pathway to a more regulated, grounded, and integrated connection between body, mind, and spirit—supported by both ancient wisdom and modern science.

FAQ’s of Yoga Therapy

  • Individualized Yoga Therapy sessions are designed to complement and enhance your current healthcare regimen. Whether you’re seeing a physical therapist, chiropractor, acupuncturist, or counselor, Yoga Therapy can serve as a powerful bridge, uniting these treatments to promote greater harmony in both mind and body.

Therapeutic SomaYoga uses gentle, curiosity-driven movements and classic yoga postures to address a wide range of conditions and enhance overall well-being.

    It may specifically help with:

    • Stress, Anxiety, depression, PTSD & other Trauma-Related Conditions

    • Chronic Low Back Pain

    • Arthritis, TMJ, IBS

    • Neck & Shoulder Tension

    • Postural Imbalances & Movement Restrictions

    • Sciatica, Scoliosis & Nerve Pain

    • Fibromyalgia & Tension Headaches

    • Carpal Tunnel & Repetitive Stress Injuries

    • Chronic Fatigue & Low Energy

    • Post or Pre-Surgery or Injury Recovery

    Key Benefits of Yoga Therapy:

    • Supports Other Therapies: Integrates seamlessly with physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, talk therapy, and more for comprehensive, whole-person healing.

    • Manages Stress & Anxiety: Learn practical techniques to calm the mind, regulate the nervous system, and develop ongoing resilience in daily life.

    • Empowers Self-Care: Gain tools, knowledge, and confidence to continue your healing at home, building a sustainable self-care practice that lasts well beyond each session.

    • Mind-Body Connection: Experience a modality that deeply honors the interplay between mental and physical well-being, fostering a sense of balance from the inside out.

  • Yoga therapy and physical therapy (PT) both support healing and movement, but they differ in their approach, scope, and focus:

    Whole-Person Healing vs. Injury Rehabilitation

    • Yoga therapy is a holistic practice that integrates movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and lifestyle adjustments to address not only physical concerns but also mental, emotional, and energetic well-being.

    • Physical therapy primarily focuses on rehabilitating specific injuries or restoring function to a particular body part through targeted exercises and manual therapy.

    Nervous System & Mind-Body Connection

    • Yoga therapy helps regulate the nervous system, addressing stress-related tension, trauma, and chronic pain conditions that may not fully resolve with PT alone.

    • PT tends to focus more on biomechanics and movement mechanics without necessarily addressing the mind-body connection.

    Tools & Techniques

    • Yoga therapy uses somatics, movement (asana), breathwork (pranayama), guided relaxation, meditation, and somatic awareness to create lasting change.

    • Physical therapy uses exercise-based rehab, hands-on techniques (like manual therapy or dry needling), and sometimes medical devices (ultrasound, TENS, etc.).

    Who It’s For

    • Yoga therapy is great for people with chronic pain, stress-related conditions, post-PT recovery, autoimmune disorders, anxiety, insomnia, and more. It’s about long-term self-regulation and healing rather than just symptom relief.

    • Physical therapy is often prescribed by a doctor for acute injuries, post-surgical recovery, or mobility impairments and typically has a shorter treatment plan focused on functional restoration.

    Complementary, Not Competitive

    • Yoga therapy and PT can work together—many people finish physical therapy and still need support for movement confidence, chronic pain management, or nervous system regulation. Yoga therapy helps bridge that gap.

  • Yoga therapy and cognitive or talk-based therapy (such as psychotherapy or counseling) both aim to support mental and emotional well-being, but they take different approaches to healing:

    Body-Centered vs. Mind-Centered

    • Yoga therapy works from the body to the mind, using breathwork, movement, and meditation to regulate the nervous system, release stored tension, and promote healing. Often referred to as ‘bottom-up processing.’

    • Talk therapy works from the mind to the body, using conversation, reflection, and cognitive tools to process thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Often referred to as ‘top-down’ processing.

Regulating the Nervous System & Somatic Healing

    • Yoga therapy directly engages the nervous system, helping clients shift from chronic stress (fight-or-flight) into a more balanced state. This is particularly helpful for trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and stress-related conditions that may not fully resolve through talking alone.

    • Talk therapy focuses on identifying and reframing thought patterns, emotional processing, and behavioral changes, but may not always integrate movement or body awareness.

    Beyond Verbal Processing

    • Some emotions, traumas, and stressors are stored in the body, not just in the mind. Yoga therapy offers non-verbal healing tools when talking about a problem isn’t enough or feels overwhelming.

    • Talk therapy is a powerful tool for narrative processing, coping strategies, and cognitive shifts, but it may not address how emotions and trauma manifest physically.

    Who It’s For

    • Yoga therapy is beneficial for individuals who experience chronic stress, anxiety, trauma, depression, or physical symptoms tied to emotional distress (such as tension, insomnia, digestive issues, or fatigue).

    • Talk therapy is great for those who need structured support for emotional processing, cognitive restructuring, relationship issues, or deep psychological work.

    Complementary, Not Competitive

    • Many people find that yoga therapy and talk therapy work best together—yoga therapy provides body-based tools to regulate emotions, while cognitive therapy helps process thoughts and behaviors.

    • Yoga therapy can be especially helpful for people who feel “stuck” in traditional therapy and need a more embodied approach to healing.

  • Each yoga therapy session is personalized to the client’s needs, but a typical one-hour session may include the following elements:

    1. Check-In & Intentions (10-15 min)

    • Discuss how you’re feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally.

    • Review any changes or progress since the last session.

    • Set an intention or focus (e.g., pain relief, relaxation, emotional balance).

    2. Breath Awareness & Centering (5 min)

    • Guided breathwork (pranayama) to calm or energize the nervous system.

    • Mindful awareness to shift into a present, embodied state.

    3. Gentle Movement & Postures (25-30 min)

Customized yoga postures (asana) based on your needs—these may be:

    • Restorative or gentle for chronic pain or stress relief.

    • Strengthening for mobility or injury recovery.

    • Somatic-based for nervous system regulation and trauma healing.

    • Movements are guided by breath and done at your own pace, with modifications as needed.

    4. Guided Relaxation, Meditation, or Body Scan (10 min)

    • Could include Yoga Nidra, mindfulness meditation, or progressive relaxation to integrate the session.

    • Helps reset the nervous system and support healing.

    5. Reflection & Next Steps (5 min)

    • Discuss how you feel after the session.

    • Provide simple at-home practices (such as a breath technique or gentle movement).

    • Answer any questions.

What Makes a Yoga Therapy Session Unique?

    • Sessions are individualized rather than following a set sequence.

    • You’ll learn practical tools to apply outside of sessions.

    • There is a strong focus on the nervous system, breath, and holistic healing, rather than just physical movement.

  • We do not accept health insurance directly at this time. However, there is a recognized billing code you may be able to use when submitting your own claim: CPT 97139 (Unlisted Therapeutic Procedure). Coverage varies by insurance provider, so we recommend checking with your insurer about any documentation they may require.

Additionally, many Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) will cover yoga therapy sessions, so be sure to explore that option if you have an HSA/FSA.

  • Yoga therapy is not a quick fix—it’s a transformational process that empowers you to take charge of your health and well-being from the inside out. Unlike passive treatments, where you receive care from a provider, yoga therapy is client-led—you are an active participant in your healing journey.

Here’s why committing to an 8-week program creates lasting change:

    • Proactive, Not Reactive:
Traditional approaches often wait until symptoms are unbearable before offering treatment. Yoga therapy is preventative and proactive, helping you build resilience, reduce stress, and address the root cause of discomfort before it escalates.

    • You Are in Control of Your Healing:
Yoga therapy is not about a practitioner “fixing” you—it’s about learning tools that you can integrate into your daily life. Over 8 weeks, you’ll gain practical strategies to regulate your nervous system, improve movement patterns, and cultivate a deeper connection with yourself.

    • Sustainable Change Takes Time:

One session might feel great, but deep, lasting transformation doesn’t happen overnight.

Science shows that habit change and nervous system rewiring take consistency—8 weeks provides the structure needed for real progress.

Your body and mind need time to unlearn old patterns and integrate new ways of moving, breathing, and responding to stress.

    • A Personalized, Evolving Approach:
Each session builds upon the last, tailored to your unique needs. Unlike a drop-in yoga class, yoga therapy offers continuity, progress tracking, and adjustments to support your specific goals.

    • Beyond Symptom Management—A Lifestyle Shift:
This is not just about temporary relief—it’s about cultivating a way of living that supports your well-being long-term. By the end of 8 weeks, you’ll have a toolkit of movement, breathwork, and mindfulness practices to sustain your health beyond our sessions.

Yoga therapy is not something you do for a quick fix—it’s an investment in your lifelong well-being.
